Why asbestos remains a problem for Wisconsin families
Wisconsin’s paper mills, foundries, shipyards, power plants, and factories relied on asbestos for decades. That history still shows up in the state’s cancer records today.
A study by researchers at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services compared Wisconsin with the United States as a whole from 2000 to 2013. It found that mesothelioma was diagnosed in Wisconsin about 20 percent more often, and caused about 30 percent more deaths, than national rates would predict. The researchers linked the disease to work in construction and manufacturing and concluded that it remained elevated about 40 years after the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act took effect.
Asbestos was used in insulation, boilers, turbines, gaskets, packing, brakes, fireproofing, and building materials across the state. You do not need to remember every product or job site. We trace your work history for you, even if the exposure happened 20 to 50 years ago.

Listing a workplace does not mean that the employer caused anyone’s illness or is a party to any claim. Mesothelioma claims are generally brought against the companies that made, sold, or supplied asbestos-containing products. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Filing a mesothelioma claim in Wisconsin
Wisconsin filing deadlines
Under Wis. Stat. § 893.54, both personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits generally must be filed within 3 years.
When the clock starts depends on the facts, such as the date of diagnosis or the date of death. Other deadlines can apply, including in other states. Please contact us soon so we can protect your rights.
Mesothelioma care in Wisconsin
Mesothelioma is rare, and many patients seek care or a second opinion at a cancer center with extensive mesothelioma experience. These Wisconsin physicians treat thoracic and abdominal cancers, including mesothelioma.
The Mesothelioma Law Office is not affiliated with these physicians or hospitals and receives nothing of value for listing them. Listing is not an endorsement or a guarantee of care. Please talk with your own doctors about treatment choices. More Midwest centers, including Mayo Clinic and University of Chicago Medicine, are listed in our resources.
Questions from Wisconsin families
I worked in Wisconsin but live in another state now. Can you help?+
Yes. What matters most is where and how the asbestos exposure happened, which companies made or supplied the products, and where those companies are based. Many people who worked in Wisconsin mills, plants, and shipyards later moved away. Jon can explain the options that apply to you.
Do I have to bring a claim against my employer?+
No. In Wisconsin, workers’ compensation is generally the only remedy an employee has against an employer for a work-related illness (Wis. Stat. § 102.03(2)). That is why mesothelioma lawsuits are usually brought against the companies that made, sold, or supplied the asbestos-containing products, and claims are filed with asbestos trust funds, rather than against your employer. These claims are separate from any workers’ compensation claim. We do not handle workers’ compensation claims. Naming a workplace on this page does not mean that employer is responsible.
Do I have to travel to Milwaukee or Madison to meet with you?+
No. We come to you anywhere in Wisconsin. We meet with patients and families at their homes, or by video or phone if that is more convenient.
My loved one died of mesothelioma. Can our family still file a claim?+
Often, yes. Wisconsin allows certain family members to bring a wrongful death claim, and the deadline is generally 3 years. A claim for the person’s own injuries may also continue on behalf of the estate. Because deadlines depend on the facts, please contact us soon.
I served in the Navy and was stationed or trained outside Wisconsin. Does that matter?+
Many Wisconsin veterans were exposed aboard Navy ships or at shipyards and bases in other states. Those exposures can still support a claim. Legal claims against manufacturers are separate from VA benefits, and pursuing one does not reduce the other.
